Renovation of the Great Tidjane Mosque in Tivaouane
Tivaouane is one of Senegal’s holy cities and the capital of the Tidjaniyya brotherhood. Its Grand Mosque welcomes tens of thousands of worshippers during religious ceremonies—particularly during the annual ziarra. Faced with this large-scale sanitation challenge, Tx-H2O deployed a System O)) designed to handle exceptional crowds, in direct partnership with the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS).
The project has now become a benchmark for sanitation in places of worship and high-traffic sites in West Africa.

A high-traffic website, the highest standards
The Great Mosque of Tivaouane presents unique sanitation challenges: visitor numbers vary greatly depending on the time of year—ranging from a few hundred on weekdays to tens of thousands during ziarra—and the need for absolute reliability in a sacred place.
Installation steps
Hydrogeological analysis of the site, assessment of daily flow rates and peak flows, calculation of the optimal design parameters for System O.
Tx-H2O assisted the mosque committee in preparing the complete application package for submission to ONAS.
Installation of the waterproof geomembrane, installation of the biological reactor and System O piping, backfilling with tested filter sand.
Connection to the mosque’s wastewater collection system, flow and effluent quality tests, ONAS certification, and official commissioning.
